Muscles Categories.
Muscle Fibers - Large, multinucleate single cells, either cylindrical or prismatic in shape, that form the basic unit of skeletal muscle tissue. They consist of a soft contractile substance enclosed in a tubular sheath. They are derived from the fusion of skeletal myoblasts (MYOBLASTS, SKELETAL) into a syncytium, followed by differentiation. |
Muscle, Skeletal - Striated muscles having fibers connected at either or both extremities with the bony framework of the body. These are found in appendicular and axial muscles. (From Stedman, 25th ed) |
Muscle, Smooth - Unstriated and unstriped muscle, one of the muscles of the internal organs, blood vessels, hair follicles, etc. Contractile elements are elongated, usually spindle-shaped cells with centrally located nuclei. Smooth muscle fibers are bound together into sheets or bundles by reticular fibers and frequently elastic nets are also abundant. (From Stedman, 25th ed) |
Myocardium - The muscle tissue of the HEART composed of striated, involuntary muscle known as cardiac muscle. |
